Best light I’ve used

I’ve been a daily bike commuter for >10 years and I regularly go on long rides (gravel and road) on weekends. I’ve used multiple combinations of various lights over the years, most recently switching between a Niterider and Cygolite. Each has its pros (bright, multiple modes, lightweight) and cons (poor mounting, heavy, blinding to on coming traffic). I have been using the Detour light mounted with the action camera mount for the past 3 weeks. It has been great so far and combines the pros of my other lights without so much of the cons. The mount is solid, the quick release is secure. Some reviews have dinged it for being more finicky than expected but I have found it to be no more so than my other lights, just different. It has tight tolerance so there’s no disconcerting rattle. The cutoff beam works well. Again some feel disappointed that it is not as sharp as they expected but in my opinion it does the job well. To me the cutoff doesn’t have to look like a clear laser cut line on a wall; it works as intended. I also like the wide beam pattern (better than my lights or those of other commuters I see). I really appreciate the thoughtful day and night commuter patterns. I highly recommend.

Unfortunate - 2/2 not up to standard

OK, so it's with quite some disappointment I write this review.

First light was used for the first time in November and had water ingress / stopped working after ONE rainy ride (see my review on 11/24/2024). I was pretty shocked at this, but the support team were helpful and sent out another light relatively quickly.

Second light arrived loose in a cardboard box with a token bit of foam on top (see first picture). Light got a bit bumped around and scuffed (see second picture). Main issue was that there were some cuts through the soft plastic coating (see third picture) that couldn't have been from shipping - I assume this was a workshop issue. Overall it just felt like I got hastily sent a factory second to replace the water damaged one. I fully understand that these blemishes were cosmetic and unlikely to impact the performance of the light, but I suspect most customers would expect better.

General comments: I was drawn to this light based on the design and reviews but left highly disappointed. from my n=2 experience:
- Build quality is ok, but not what I would call premium.
- Mount is ok, but more finicky than I expected.
- Beam cutoff is ok, but not the game-changer or as sharp as I was expecting
- I can't see any waterproofness rating on the spec sheet - so beware. A couple of us have had issues

Given the issues with 2/2 lights I have decided to cut my losses, return/refund and move on to another brand.

My recommendation would to look for German StVZO approved lights for beam quality and anti-dazzle features. I went with a Lupine and it is top-notch.

Credit to the support team for prompt replies and trying to fix things. I hope this review contributes to product improvement. Cheers.

Not what I hoped

Was excited for this light based on reviews but it didn’t live up to the hype. Mount had poor tolerances for taking light out, i.e., difficult to remove from the “quick release,” and overall the mount felt flimsy and subject to the light snapping off, which was a surprise for an expensive light. I was also let down by the quality of the light. I did a side by side comparison with my existing $50 light, and the $50 light illuminated the road better. Would love a good light with a cutoff beam. Maybe I’ll just put some electrical tape over my cheap light. Appreciate the responsive customer service.

Awesome light

The Detour is an amazing light for commuting. I use it in the northeast, and winter rides home are always in the dark. The light pattern makes riding on dark unlit trails as well as in traffic with cars much less stressful.

Good light

I was expecting the cutoff to be more pronounced. Still a great light. Keeps us safe!

Automotive headlights
For your bike

Bringing our automotive lighting experience to provide a clean cut-off beam pattern that evenly illuminates the road ahead. You wouldn't use a flashlight for your car, why use it for your bike?

Optical Engineering

This is the game changer. Not only did we bring the automotive grade cutoff beam pattern to your handlebars, we took it a step further by precisely controlling how much light leaves the light and hits the ground from the front of your tire all the way up to where you are looking. When you read "it's like riding in daylight" this is why.

We are the only USA-based manufacturer of cutoff (also referred to as StVZO) beam pattern bike lights, we also made sure the light has unreal width to light up the ditches and keep the spooky things away.

Detour was designed with your ride in mind. Long runtime, easy mounting, broad panoramic beam, fast USB-C charging, and all backed by industry leading customer service.

Rock Solid Mounting

A good light isn’t so good if
it’s bouncing up and down on the bars all the time. That’s why we made a bolt-on clamp mount for Detour so it’s solidly locked to the bar, With a simple shim it adapts from 35mm to 31.8mm handlebars (25.4 and 22mm shims available) and the beam won’t shake around like lights with rubber strap mounts do.

Keep Life Simple

Few people read instruction manuals, even fewer want to, we keep our lights dead simple so that you don’t need an advanced degree to remember some complicated sequence of button presses to get to the mode you want.

USB-C pass-Thru Charging

We were one of the first to offer USB-C charging as standard, except we took it a step further by offering pass-through charging as well. This lets you plug in any USB power bank and charge the light while in use,
in any mode. Game changer for 24 hour races and extra long night rides!

Keeping Cool

When you pick up this light you might be surprised to not feel any metal. Plastic?! Must be something we used to be cheap isn't it? Far from it. This material we use is an incredibly cool (ha) engineered resin that is not only very durable, but also conducts heat. The result is a lightweight, durable, and thermally balanced light housing.

Make your Night ride enjoyable.

It can be sketchy riding at night when you are used to narrow beam patterns better suited for walking in the backyard. Our incredible optical engineering makes riding at night a joy again.
